E-Learning Heroes Challenges
Articulate produces Storyline 360, the e-learning authoring tool I use most often. They sponsor E-Learning Heroes Challenges each week, which encourage e-learning developers and instructional designers to learn, share, and develop their skills. On this page, you can find samples that I entered into the challenges.
Select the images below to experience each sample.
#496: Exploring & Magnifying Details in E-Learning
The zoom function in Storyline 360 helps learners focus on document details but is tied to the timeline. In this sample, I solved this issue by combining zoom with multiple slides. This allows learners to explore symbolic elements of the “Arnolfini Portrait” at their own pace.
#491: Rediscovering Traditional Skills Through E-Learning
Lost arts are the basic skills for self-sufficient living that have been forgotten or replaced by modern technology. For this sample, I decided to teach learners about the “lost art” of dialing a rotary phone. The interaction offers a tactile experience with a touch of nostalgia.
#489: How To Set the Perfect Dinner Table
This microlearning course in Rise will explain how to set a place setting according to the traditional Japanese custom of Ichiju Sansai, or “one soup and three dishes”. First, learn where to place each item at the setting, and then try it for yourself!
#488: How Ms. Frizzle Can Help You Build Better E-Learning
The Magic Schoolbus narratives use the framework of a main narrative, scope and bridge to make learning more fun. In this sample, you can find the main narrative on the sign, the scope as a conversation between the characters, and the bridge in the form of phishing tips.
#487: Using Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year in E-Learning
Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse. This sample offers you the chance to learn about the four beautiful National Parks in Oregon and Washington. Mocha Mousse can be seen as the background to the title and body texts.
#484: Using Markers to Transform Graphics into Interactive Elements
Markers are a quick and easy way to make images interactive. This sample demonstrates using the “content opens” and “content closes” triggers to dim and highlight objects, and play music. Enjoy learning about these five popular plucked string instruments!
#468: How are You Using Drag-and-Drop Interactions?
Drag-and-Drop interactions are infamous for not being accessible. In this demo, I illustrate how this interaction can be made accessible without having to drag a mouse. You can click or tab through the interaction with no need to use a mouse.
#462: Moving Beyond E-Learning's Next Button
There is more than one way to move through content in e-learning. In this sample, I demonstrate three different ways to access the same content. You can click, hover, or drag-and-drop.
#460: How Are Designers Using Toggle Buttons in E-Learning?
This sample takes inspiration from a classic marble run. Use toggle switches to release a marble, change the background and switch the directions of platforms to score maximum points before the timer runs out!
#459: Using Photo Mosaics to Design Interactive Stories
This sample provides a unique method for presenting learners with assessment questions. Questions are randomly selected for the learner from a picture mosaic. Each picture leads to a short video and accompanying a sample assessment question.
This sample showcases how a spinning wheel can be used to randomize assessment questions. The learner has to answer four questions correctly, and may or may not get another try if they answer incorrectly.
#458: Creating Roulette & Spinning Wheel Games in E-Learning
#456: How are Designers Using Phat Fonts in E-Learning?
Be quick and burst the balloons in order to spell out simple words! This interaction uses three “phat” fonts: Baby Gemoy, Circus and Berlin Sans FB Demi.
#454: Using Text, True/False and Number Variables in E-Learning
Sometimes, something that seems simple can be deceptively complex. This sample uses all three Storyline variables to create a list of preferred pets in the order they are selected.
#453: Using Interactive Dials in E-Learning
In this sample, I demonstrate how dials can be used to create simple animations. There are six dials on each slide. One is used to control all of the others.
#452: Show How You're Using AI to Create E-Learning Courses
This interaction showcases six different AI tools that can be used in course creation. Almost everything in this sample was created by AI - fom the imges to the music.
#449: Using Emphasis Animations to Grab Learners' Attention
Learn about eight types of culinary mushroom in this accessible-friendly dial interaction, which uses grow, shrink, and pulse emphasis animations to highlight
each topic.
#448: Using Tabs Interactions in E-Learning
Tabs are a great way to allow learners to access large amounts of information without leaving the slide. In this sample, the learner clicks on taps instead of tabs.
#447: Spotlight Masking Effects for Discovery Activities in E-Learning
Using a masking effect allows learners to explore and focus on various portions of an image. In this escape room style game, you have to seek out objects, examine them, and solve riddles to escape.
#446: Rotating and Exploring 3D Objects in E-Learning
I wanted to explore how learners could interact with a 3D object as they rotate it. This sample allows you to learn about the seven continents as you rotate the globe.
#445: How Can You Use This Motion Path in Your E-Learning Projects?
Using a 0 pixel motion path is a very useful trick to allow for multiple objects to be used in a drag-and-drop interaction without having to add dozens of draggable items. You can experience this method after you help the crow with its task.
#444: Using Pantone's 2024 Color of the Year in E-Learning
Pantone’s 2024 color of the year was Peach Fuzz. I had fun using this color in a quiz style interaction all about peach facts. Select the answer you think is correct and catch the peach as it falls!
#442: Using Background Audio and Music in E-Learning
Sounds and music play a major role in this game. From the 80’s synth inspired music to the laser zaps and explosions, sound makes it all come together.
#439: Keep It or Trash It: Drag-and-Drop Sorting Activities
Sorting activities are frequently used in e-learning to place items in categories. This sample requires you to watch Thomas’s reaction to decide if he want to keep or donate items of clothing.
#437: Choose Your Own E-Learning Challenge
In this sample, I showcase how to use dials and variables to create a simulation-based knowledge check.
